Gaining International Readers when your Internet is Down
I live in the country and have highspeed. That said, I live in the country so at certain times of year my internet is up and down like a toilet seat at a mixed beer party. Thus I end up on the phone to the Nice Young Tech in India where my server shops out their customer service.
Waiting for their computer to process... being nice... I start a converstation.
Me: "Thanks so much for you help... I need this connection. I'm writing an online novel and try to post five days a week.
NYT: "A novel? What kind of novel?"
Me: "A fantasy. About a young prince coming of age in a decadent and about to be conquered Empire. The prince's best friend is at the head of the conquering army."
NYT: "I used to read fantasy in college..."
Me: "Here's the url... why don't you check it out when we get this working again..."
NYT: "I will. That's interesting... oh, sorry, my computer is slow today, my apologies..."
Me: "Oh no, not at all."
NYT: "So while we are waiting for my computer... your prince..."
fade to continued conversation about weblit till the machinery catches up to the humans.
I now have readers in India. Not huge amounts but one never knows who this tech will mention my work to.
Promotion is everywhere, even when the internet connection is down!
Thank you... it seems to be spreading a bit... I actually went to the city in India, in Google Earth to 'walk around' a bit...
Well done!
Snap re internet connection & indian call centre techies lol You're not with BT by any chance are you?
Next time I'm on the line I will take a leaf out of your book
I'm with Ma Bell ie Bell Canada... they shipped out their tech to India a while ago.
Neat story! It'd be neat if your serial started making the rounds in the call center. Talk about a readership boost!
I can hope! I've gotten at least one reader from that city... I have no idea if it will spread but from your mouth to the universe. And I'll keep talking about it!

This is a really good example of using every and any opportunity to tell people about your work. Congrats on the new reader!
