Feeling like maybe I was hijacking the ad design for hire thread too much, I decided to start a fresh one and delete from there. Here's some of my character art:

Do you make your own character art? Or did you commission it from someone? I do pencil sketches of my characters and then buy color pretties from others.

I did a sketch of Chevenga that the cover artist who was working for Baen clipped to his easel and faithfully copied for Lion's Heart. I then scanned a reproduction of that and sampled it into FaceGen, to make a template of the face that I now edit and manipulate in different ways using both FaceGen and Corel PhotoPaint (Corel's version of PhotoShop). So I can't say I did any image of Chevenga totally myself.

The others are all mine, however, created using FaceGen -- either from its random face generator (I keep clicking until I spot one that looks almost like a character, then tweak it until it's more exact a resemblance) or by sampling in and then altering a photo. (The one I'm working on of female lead Niku, for instance, is based on Halle Berry.) I then embellish them with photos gleaned from the Internet and altered beyond actionability (I hope) plus just straight painting using PhotoPaint.
