A ban
I've banned Lin Robinson for sockpuppetry. I'm not going off other people's words; I'm looking at evidence of my own, including IP addresses indicating that Cammy May Hunnicut, Barri Stallins (the "person" whose interview of David Wong Lin was promoting), and Team 2012 are all aliases that promote one another and Lin. Possibly there are more, but these are the ones I have personal knowledge of.
I didn't like doing this. Lin's been behaving around here for the most part lately. But promoting and praising the Barri Stallins interview and "her" new community at ning.com, and not mentioning he was Barri Stallins, is not acceptable. That combined with past behavior and behavior elsewhere (notably at Web Fiction Guide, where he was reviewing and rating his own material under aliases) resulted in the ban. I'd banned Team 2012 (an alleged group account) a few days ago when it was clear it was the same person as Lin.
Aliases and pen names are all well and good. I use one myself. But you have to own up to your aliases, and not use them to promote yourself as if they're neutral third parties.
To reiterate: I REALLY HATE BANNING PEOPLE. But some things you just don't do, and sockpuppetry is one of them.
It's not an us vs. them thing, Karen. If you like the features there and want to keep using it, then do.
It's not like you're risking being a pariah here because of it.
That's not what I'm worried about. I just don't want to deal or be associated with anyone lacking integrity.
Plus, the invite was so flattering I had a bit of a bad feeling about it, as well as a bit of bad feeling about Lin himself, but I went for it anyway, and now I feel like an idiot.
Eh, we've all fallen for dumb shit. No worries. At least he didn't cost anyone money (that I know of).
My invite was not so much flattering as slightly creepy. I was asked to join because they liked "cute avatars and flowers."
I sent back a reply that I hoped I had more to contribute than cuteness.
Ning itself is a huge network. There's valid communities hosted on it, so I'm sure you can find something else there worth joining. Writer's Digest has one I think, along with a lot of other folks.
"I just don't want to deal or be associated with anyone lacking integrity."
Ditto Karen.
I am just pleased he has been exposed and (fingers crossed) no one has been harmed by his deceit.
The only person harmed has been him, as far as I'm aware. He wasn't a classical scammer; he was simply trying to pump up his reputation and garner attention. He's certainly gotten the latter, which is why I think we need to return to regular programming now.
Yikes. I just joined up last night (I get reclusive from time to time and missed all this drama). I'll stick around and see how it goes for a little bit before I decide to bail or not.
So far, this is the only drama, and it wasn't of our making. Hope you stick around.
Welcome!
As MeiLin said, we're normally a low-drama, friendly bunch. Come on in and stay a while!
~Lyn, far too perky for a Monday
Oh, I meant there, not here. I'll stick around here for sure. You're not scaring me off.
Good! We're not at all scary!
Well, okay, sometimes a little, and my friends' girlfriends are scared of me...
... but in general, we're nice people
~Lyn, still perky. Help me before I perk again!
According to Irk and Char, I'm the scariest.
Wow. The drama.
Oh well. Back to work...

Oh crap... I just signed up at ning, and I like a lot of the features there...
I used to think my writing was horribly perverse, and now I worry that it's not perverse enough for the Internet.
